My reading habits
I see the
images and of course, I can relate to them.
I have fond
memories of my childhood, reading alone immersed in my inner world, surrounded
by books. I was a vivid read, a bookworm! I would read comics, biographies, novels,
tales, everything… I can blame my parents for many things except for giving me
the possibility of having a wonderful library at home. All kind of books were
available for my brother and me. My favourite author was Roald Dahl, his books are
real page-turners!
When I was
a student, both in secondary school and at university, I used to read the
compulsory books. On one hand, it was a nasty job, an obligation which wasn’t
very motivating and on the other, sometimes I discovered authors and works that
left a great mark on my life but others were all forgotten.
I used to
read novels in English but not anymore. Nowadays I only read online newspapers
and magazines and maybe some poems but not long books.
On the
contrary, I enjoy reading novels in French. When I was in the fourth year at
the EOI I read lots of books in French, some of them were compulsory (we discussed
them in class, it was my favourite part!) and others that I borrowed from the
school library. It was a very productive
year in terms of reading.
In my own
language, I’ve renewed my love for books. I know that it was just a question of
habit but it took a while. During the last years I started reading books but I lost
interest in the first chapters and didn’t finish them. I didn’t get hooked and
I stopped reading them. Since I was given an ebook for my birthday, I have read
several books, all in Spanish and most of them were novels. Above all, I love
reading novels about human relations, love, relationships, etc.
I must confess
that I normally read more during holidays. For me it’s hard reading at night, specially
after a long day. At the end of the day, I feel exhausted and I usually
go to sleep early and fall asleep immediately.
I wish my son
read more. He is a bit lazy and I don’t know what to do to make him feel
interested in reading. I have tried so many things, I have bought tons of books, we have been to the public
library, we have attended storytelling activities, I gave him some rewards every
time he read some pages or was reading for 15 minutes. Nothing worked. All
suggestions are welcome! ;)
Hi Penélope,
ResponderEliminarI totally understand what you say...I wish my daughter was more fond of books and reading, as I used to be as a kid. I honesty think it really takes having an example, a model to follow. If only we had more time to raise our kids and teach them what we love, share our passions...being supermoms is not easy...this page gives some useful tips on how to make reading fun for kids. It's not the be all and end all, but some ideas may come in handy...
All the best,
Inma.
